My Community Challenge

What did you do?

For my community challenge, I wanted to create a 7-day wellbeing booklet for people so that the booklet can be used over and over again without the tasks becoming too repetitive.

I wanted the focus to be on health psychology, nature, wellbeing and redefining productivity. In our culture, there is a "hussle culture" where the goal is to be productive and work as hard as you can to the point it can be detrimental to our mental health. I wanted to try and force people to take time out and encourage them to interact with nature some more.

Who did you do it with (community partners)

I consulted with my university's sustainability team a lot to find my partners. I started off by talking to The Wildlife Trust to get some ideas on how I could incorporate nature into my project a bit more. However, my main partner was Inclusion Glos. We had a few meetings to figure out how we would work together and how we would create our own booklets while still acting as partners.

What global goals did you tackle?

What are the global goals?

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals (officially known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs). It's now five years on, and we have more work than ever to do. These goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change. Guided by the goals, it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone. - Global Goals

Which did I focus on in my community project?

For my community challenge, I focused on goal #3 Good Health and Wellbeing.

According to their website, this goal is about...

Over the last 15 years, the number of childhood deaths has been cut in half. This proves that it is possible to win the fight against almost every disease. Still, we are spending an astonishing amount of money and resources on treating illnesses that are surprisingly easy to prevent. The new goal for worldwide Good Health promotes healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone.

How did this fit in with people, profit and the planet?

What is people, profit, planet?

People, profit, planet is known as The Triple Bottom Line - a sustainability network to examine the social, environmental and economic impact.

How does my project fit in?

People/social - By encouraging people to go outside and interact with nature, I am hoping to encourage people to interact with other people. Some people may choose to go on a walk by themselves but a lot of the time people will bring their friends and family along (abiding by the covid guidelines) and make an event of it. When it is allowed, people may choose to interact with nature by going on a day out to see buildings, go on picnics and just generally spend more time with nature.

Profile/economic - During covid, many people have been unable to find jobs and have struggled financially. Therefore, I have made this booklet free to all. As mentioned above, when covid guidelines permit it, people may be encouraged to make an event of the time they are spending in nature with outdoor concerts for example.

Planet/environmental- This booklet was designed to have no environmental impact. The idea was that people with phones or tablet could download the booklet onto that tablet and annotate the boxes from their phones using their fingers. The PDF can also be converted to a word document to edit for those that prefer to type their answers - this booklet was designed to be entirely virtual and therefore have no environmental impacts in terms of ink, paper and printing.

Thank you for reading!
