What is it?
Every year, people around the world come together to raise awareness about suicide to try and create a world where fewer people are committing suicide each year.
When is it?
September 10th (annually)
Why is it important?
Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds
Suicide is the leading killer of men aged 45-49
75% of people exhibit signs of suicide before killing themselves
For each adult who died by suicide, there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide
Men are 3 times more likely to die by suicide than females in the UK
Rates for those under 25 has increased, particularly 10 to 24-year-old females where the rate has increased significantly to 3.3 deaths per 100,000 females in 2018
The most common method of suicide in the UK was hanging, accounting for 59.4% of all suicides among males and 45.0% of all suicides among females

People do not "commit" suicide - this dates back to when suicide was a crime. If caught, the person was punished by hanging
